FALL RIVER — The woman who prosecutors say was neglected by her family and left to sit in her own urine and feces for at least a month, without grooming or cleaning, died on Thursday..........
Mary Araujo, of 161 Lonsdale St., was allegedly neglected by her daughter, son-in-law and three grandsons, who lived in the same home. Thursday was Araujo’s 81st birthday.............
Araujo was discovered by police after the family called paramedics Saturday and doctors at St. Anne’s Hospital saw her condition, Gagne said. She had not been groomed or washed in weeks, had bedsores so deep that her tendons were exposed, had an infection in her bloodstream and developed pneumonia after she was admitted to the hospital, he said.
“She was essentially urinating and defecating in the chair she was in. She was occasionally wiped down and then returned to the chair,” Gagne said in court. She was left “basically to rot to death.”
The district attorney’s office said the family was also cashing Araujo’s $1,100 monthly Social Security check and had been using it for household expenses.
Attorneys for the Cabrals said the defendants had not criminally neglected the woman.........
